A DIFFERENT KIND OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

My patients tend to seek an alternative to traditional physical therapy and are looking for a progressive, educational and full-body approach to care. I believe strongly in the ability of the human body to self-heal with just a mindful push in the right direction.

I offer a wide variety of treatment and care options to address the many complexities of physical dysfunction.

The following is a partial list of treatment techniques and what they do.

HANDS ON APPROACH

Manual therapy encompasses relaxing and pain reducing techniques. It includes very specific mechanisms of body work that allow simply profound results 

IMPROVES RANGE OF MOTION

Most of our actions require the synchronicity of joints. All cartilaginous articulations move through different axis's to perform a movement. Mobilizations stretch or manipulate joint capsules to restore proper movement, decrease pain, and improve range of motion. Only when joints move properly and conjunctively, can the mind-body communicate with ease.

HELPS THE BODY TO MOVE MORE FREELY

Every orthopedic structure and organ is encased in fascia. Often the fascia becomes tightened when the body stops moving properly from injury, surgery, stress and chronic pain. Myofascial release helps the body to move more freely. When layers of connective tissue become scarred and/or restricted, other structures begin to compensate, moving unstably, ineffectively or not at all. The interconnection of the body is so vast and complicated, sometimes affecting areas are far from the fascial restriction.

INCREASES PROPER FUNCTION POST SURGERY

Post-surgical scars can be manipulated to decrease adherence to underlying structures and improve proper function and freedom of motion.  Although scars reach a point where they are complete and unchangeable, their interaction with adjacent tissue can be altered with this manual technique.

ADDRESSING VISCERAL MOBILITY

Often orthopedic pain and dysfunction can result from decreased organ mobility. Organs have an innate ability to move, as well as expand and contract (motility). Visceral manipulation is a gentle technique that restores their function and encourages a harmonic relationship between viscera and orthopedic structures.

GENTLE BODY WORK THAT ENCOURAGES EASE AND BODY REBALANCING

Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle type of bodywork that addresses the cerebral spinal fluid, nourishing the brain and spinal cord. This remarkable intentional sensory technique follows the cranial sacral rhythm and positively affects all body systems. Cranial Sacral can be used to alleviate all kinds of orthopedic issues but I tend to administer it most often for chronic headaches, somatic unwinding, TMJ syndrome, anxiety, insomnia, head trauma and neck/pelvic pain.

A PROCESS OF GUIDED MOVEMENT

Neuromuscular re-education helps the body “remember” healthy movement and proper alignment. It encourages movement with ease, a greater range of motion and freedom of pain. It supports how we execute the movement in all our postural habits, daily activities, and athletic endeavors.

SCIENTIFIC THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE PROGRESSION

Every structure in the body has its own optimal stimulus for repair depending on its collagen components and what stage of healing the injury is in. Specific exercises prescribed for the exact structure in lesion whether its bone, ligament, joint, tendon, muscle or fascia, profoundly increase the speed at which our bodies can recover.

OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE

Running techniques to improve form, efficiency, speed, and strength will be addressed. Optimal footwear will be discussed. Programs designed for running goals will be put in place. Warm-ups, cooldowns and personalized supportive exercises will be instated into your running routine.

TRAINING TO MEET YOUR REHABILITATION GOALS

This will include gym, home, and outdoor exercise routines designed to repair and prevent future injuries, modified to avoid pain and progressed to meet your rehabilitation goals. Exercise programs incorporate movement from my dance, capoeira, running, functional exercise, cross-training and yoga background.

BUILD STRENGTH IN WEAK OR INJURED MUSCLES

Bend To Mend Physical therapy offers individual yoga classes tailored specifically to your fitness, wellness and rehabilitation goals that can be used with all physical pursuits with a more mindful approach. Carri's style of yoga emphasizes the use and flexibility of the core along with breath verses the overuse/overstretch of the limbs. Modifications and specific rehabilitative yoga postures for injuries are prescribed.
